An intelligent electric scooter that redefines the e-scooters landscape with a top speed of around 65 mph and a range of up to 80 miles.

The Weped GTR Electric Scooter is the future of urban mobility. The scooter delivers solid craft and a reliable performance packed in a stylish design. The GTR is the epitome of Korean engineering and has excellent features. It has been designed keeping in mind the requirements of an average daily commuter and the occasional adrenaline junkie.

The scooter’s design is sleek and edgy, with an aerodynamic profile that looks as good as it performs. The GTR is a niche-scooter offering, highly-priced but craftily designed to meet the riding needs of Weped fanatics.

Weped GTR: The Lowdown…

Weped is setting standards for electric scooters worldwide. The Korea-based brand has redefined the e-scooter game with its high tech scooters. Redefining the game isn’t easy, but Weped managed to do it in style. Their scooters are handcrafted with precision and attention to detail. The Weped scooters are much more than just a mode of transportation; they are full-fledged style statements.

The GTR is a testament to the brand’s commitment to providing only the best in both design and performance. It has a sturdy build quality and is packed with advanced features-GTR promises lifestyle convenience and excellent performance. Its curvy silhouette stands out as with other iterations of Weped’s super scooters. At the same time, its chunky build vaguely throws you back to the sturdy form of the widely-popular Dualtron scooters.

This lifestyle scooter has excellent features and unparalleled performance, giving you the freedom to travel further and longer. The robust motor has a top speed of 65 mph, and the ride feels like a zoom on the fastest electric scooter as of 2021, Rion RE90. The battery is the smallest of the Weped family- Weped SSR and SST, which delivers the shortest range of the three- 80 miles.

You will notice subtle differences between the GTR and its predecessors, such as the absence of stem and deck lights. The performance specs are also rated lower than the SSR and SST, but this also means that the GTR is the cheapest Weped option on the market.

Available at £3,975 in the UK and $5300 in the US, is this a scooter worth the investment? Let’s find out.

Weped GTR Summary

Weped is taking electric scooters to new levels with innovative design and groundbreaking new features. Its electric scooters offer superior quality, performance and unmatched style. Each unit they ship is meticulously handcrafted, tested and inspected by their team of experts. The GTR is no exception, being one of the best-selling scooters in the mid-range segment. It offers excellent value for money with high-end features, powerful performance and superior build quality.

This beautiful scooter has all the features you’d expect from a premium model, along with some unique aesthetic enhancements that give it an edge over its competitors. The GTR features powerful dual motors with 20,000W of output and dual controllers. The lithium-ion battery packs a whopping 45Ah capacity and high energy density to provide long running times and a superior range. You never have to worry about stopping as the scooter is outfitted with responsive dual Nutt hydraulic brakes.

The scooter’s frame is crafted from 6061 aviation grade alloy, which ensures that it can withstand harsh road conditions and offers maximum durability. The GTR provides excellent comfort thanks to 10 inches, 4.5″ ultra-wide tubeless tyres and a grippy deck. It also comes with a front coil and rear spring shocks for smooth rolling over obstacles. However, the absence of a proper lighting system means that your expeditions might stay limited to the daytime.

The scooter is not portable but folds into a compact package for easy storage. In addition, it has the highest payload of most scooters in the market. The increased weight can be credited to the fact that it is almost all metal, which also means fewer breakables. Weped also allows for upgrades for its products during shipping, like Magura brakes instead of Nutt brakes, among others, to be featured in this piece.

Overall, it is one of the best scooters and offers excellent functionality with style. Read on for a detailed look at the specs that make the GTR one of the best electric scooters in the mid-range category.

Performance Overview

The Weped GTR electric scooter is packed with some fantastic features that make it one of the top-performing electric scooters on the market. It is built with high-end components and innovative new technology to ensure superior performance.

This scooter is no slouch for power either, with dual motors pushing a max output of 20,000W. The GTR is perfect for riders who require a little more oomph from their electric scooter and travels as fast as 65 mph ( 104km/h). The scooter can effortlessly scale inclines up to 35 degrees and haul a maximum of 300 lbs (136 kg).

The scooter also comes with an active motor control which applies varied current and torque to the front and rear motor, which significantly assists in handling the scooter, as opposed to pumping 5000 watts through each motor.

The lithium-ion battery pack that powers the scooter is also an incredible piece of tech in its own right, with a whopping 45Ah capacity and 2700 Wh energy density. It comes with high-end cells, tested and inspected by Samsung’s experts to ensure maximum quality and safety. This gives you longer running times by offering up to 80 miles (128 km) of range on a single charge.

The GTR scooter puts safety first while still pushing the envelope when it comes to performance. It features front and rear hydraulic disc brakes with ABS standard to keep you in total control. The braking system is well-tuned and provides robust, reliable stopping power when travelling at exhilarating speeds with a braking distance of under 4 meters from a speed of 15 mph.

Speed & Acceleration

This electric scooter offers superb acceleration with quick throttle response, so you can quickly get up to speed. The GTR accelerates rapidly to a top speed of 65 mph (104 km/h). This speed puts the GTR in the top ten fastest e-scooters category, beating renowned models Kaabo Wolf King GT, Dualtron Ultra 2, Nami Ban-E.

The GTR accelerates from 0-20 mph in under 3 seconds, making it one of the zippiest rides in the market.

This acceleration is quite jerky, especially when you push hard on the throttle, and this can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for inexperienced riders. Wear gloves to prevent soreness on your hands since the forward pull is bound to put a strain on your hand as you strive to retain grip.

The left handlebar features a Corsa button and a cruise mode button. The cruise mode allows you to maintain the scooter’s speed without using the throttle. This can come in handy if you are trying to conserve power or relieve some pressure off your thumb, especially when riding long distances. On the other hand, the Corsa button replicates the Eco function on most scooters by conserving power to the motors and limiting the speed at a lower setting than speed level 1.

The scooter has 3-speed modes allowing you to choose the most suitable mode for your riding. Level 1 is perfect for beginners who are just learning how to ride and want extra safety features. Level 2 allows more experienced riders to get up to speed fast while still braking efficiently. The third mode is ideal for veteran riders as it offers the best possible performance and acceleration for a thrilling ride. However, note that levels 2 and 3 will drain your battery fast.

    Hill Climbing

The GTR scooter is mighty and offers remarkable performance with high-power motors that deliver an impressive hill-climbing ability.

It can effortlessly climb steep inclines of up to 35 degrees thanks to its high-torque motors on each wheel. This makes it the perfect option for commuters who deal with many hills on their daily route.

    Battery & Range

The Weped GTR Electric Scooter is equipped with a 60V,45 Ah, 2700 Wh (16S9P configuration) Lithium-ion high-capacity battery pack. The battery is made by Samsung Electronics using the very best battery cells for quality and safety to give you maximum performance. The high-capacity battery gives you up to 80 miles (128 km) of range on a single charge, making it the perfect choice for people who have long commutes or need a scooter that can go the distance. This range assumes that the rider maintained a speed of around 20 mph on a joy cruise. Higher performance riding will reduce the expected range.

You can also make it last longer by using Corsa/ Eco-mode whenever possible for an impressive ride that conserves power and lasts even longer!

The scooter has a charging time of around 5 -17 hours, from 0% to 100%. Using a standard charger will take 17 hours to fully charge, while a fast charger will reduce the charging time to just 5-7 hours. The 17 hours charge time is slightly longer than electric scooters with similar battery capacities. However, the extra charge time is well worth it for the power, performance, and range that the GTR offers. The battery gives you three years of use, also equivalent to 800 charge cycles.

    Motor Configuration

The Weped GTR Electric Scooter is powered by two hub motors located in the front and rear wheels. The GTR sports the same motors as those on the SST, rated at 80A, 5000 Watts, controlled by the latest dual 100A, 60 V controllers, which combine to produce a maximum output rating of 20,000W.

The scooter’s motors use brushless technology for long-lasting performance that won’t slow down over time while providing plenty of power for an exhilarating ride on the GTR scooter. You will notice two fans encased within the deck to prevent the controllers from overheating.

      Construction & Quality

The GTR has been designed with a sleek and stylish look that is both aerodynamic and lightweight. The scooter is constructed using aviation-grade aluminium alloy for maximum strength and durability.

The shaft is crafted from SCM440 carbon steel, used in the aerospace industry for its high strength rating with reduced weight. Most scooters use lower strength steels that are susceptible to damage, particularly under heavy load conditions. The shaft is also resistant to torsional forces common on most electric scooters leading to lesser fatigue and wear over time.

One of the most outstanding features is the curved stem that improves posture while riding. The rider can also position their hands comfortably on the wide handlebars whose ends are capped in ergonomic rubber grips. It also features a beefy, tank-like deck that significantly increases the weight. The deck on this scooter is also slightly short in length and narrow, which makes for an uncomfortable stance. However, it has a rough texture grip for keeping your feet in place. Riders also get to enjoy the footrest/mudguard as compensation for the standing real estate- but it doesn’t do much to prevent splatter from debris on your feet.

The scooter is mostly metal- few plastics. The frame is also very skeletal, with no coverings and loads of exposed wiring. But, you will spot a screw cap tethered by a tiny chain on top of the deck, which covers the charging port. The scooter features perforations on the deck side, which are part of the fans needed to keep the controllers from overheating. The scooter also has a kickstand to the left of the deck.

      Suspension & Comfort

The front and rear suspension systems on the GTR Scooter feature a front coil and rear spring shocks to provide excellent stability while riding on uneven surfaces such as bumps and pavement cracks.

The 4 Link Damping Control Suspension and Bushing delivers a smooth ride over rough terrain. This groundbreaking technology not only absorbs bumps but also permits for a highly sturdy stem with little to no play. For riders closer to or above the weight limit, replacing the shocks with firmer springs is advisable to accommodate the extra load.

      Ride Quality

The GTR provides a unique and exhilarating riding experience with its combination of front coil and rear spring suspension springs for stability and comfort as you ride on the scooter. But, the scooter does not function optimally during heavy offroading as they are stiff and do not have good travel. The ergonomic handlebars provide a comfortable riding position.

In addition, the 10-inch tubeless tyres absorb vibrations from rough roads for a smoother ride on bumpy surfaces. The tubeless tyres also make the scooter more stable at higher speeds, and they provide better traction and grip on wet surfaces. The brakes are also equipped with ABS to inspire confidence when braking because there are fewer incidences of slipping when riding on slippery surfaces or gravel. ABS also reduces the braking distance.

      Lights

The GTR Electric Scooter provides efficient LED lights on the rear of the scooter and decorative programmable RGB LED lighting on the Weped logo. However, the scooter lacks front lighting, which would have been an excellent addition, especially for those who use the scooter in low light conditions.

You will have to get a headlight or use a bike light to increase your visibility while riding on the scooter. You could also add LED strip lights like previous models of the scooter. The LED taillights also improve visibility when riding or in stop-and-go traffic by warning drivers behind you that you are slowing down or stopping the scooter.

      Braking

The GTR is equipped with front and rear Nutt hydraulic disc brakes with ABS standard for precise braking while riding on bumpy roads or surfaces. The front and rear brakes are connected to the primary system with a steel brake cable at the handlebar to control your speed better when you need to stop fast. The brake levers also have an ergonomic design that easily fits your hands for maximum comfort while braking on the scooter.

The Nutt hydraulic brake callipers are also made from high-quality materials that provide long-lasting durability for better stopping power when you need to stop on a dime. Real-world tests indicate the scooter has a braking distance of under 4 meters when stopping from 15-0 mph (24-0 kmh). Weped allows purchasers to request the Magura brake upgrade kit for better quality brakes.

      Portability

The GTR Electric Scooter weighs 77 lbs (35 kg) which might be too taxing on the physical strength of some riders when they need to lift the scooter. The bladelike design of its stem also discourages portability.

However, the scooter has a foldable design that makes it easy to store. Its folding mechanism is solid and features a pinkie-sized retractable gold anodised pin that you simply pull out to fold the scooter.

      Tyres

The Weped GTR rolls on 10 inches, 4.5″ Ultra wide Shinko tubeless tyres on the front and rear wheels, which provide excellent stability, traction, and control over bumpy roads. The tyres are so broad that they can support the stationary scooter without deploying the kickstand. The tyres are similar to those found on a go-kart racing car. Furthermore, the ultra-wide tyres, which offers better shock absorption.

The tubeless tyres are made from high-quality rubber and have thicker walls; hence are less prone to punctures. This also accommodates for greater comfort while riding on rough terrain or surfaces.

Tubeless tyres also offer less rolling resistance making it easier to accelerate, maintain speed, and brake. However, you will experience less agile steering- cornering and manoeuvring will require considerably more effort. The manufacturer offers buyers the option to purchase gold tube caps for added tyre aesthetics.

      Deck

The deck measures 24.5 x 61 cm. This is not the best for riding comfort and stability. However, the deck has a rough-textured design that features a comfortable grip tape for maximum control and safety as you cruise around on the scooter. Riders will also enjoy the dedicated footrest that allows them to change foot position when riding.

The clearance is average at about 11.5cm and is therefore unsuitable for heavy offroading. There’s also a programmable Weped deck logo LED that glows in different colours for added aesthetics and low-light visibility.

      Controls & Display

The GTR has a simple and intuitive design that is very easy to use, even for beginners. The control system of the GTR Scooter is integrated into the handlebars of the scooter. The right side features a keyed ignition which serves as an anti-theft feature, a battery voltmeter, an ergonomic thumb throttle and the front brake lever.

The left side features the rear brake lever, a switch that lets you toggle between levels 1,2,3 speed modes. The Cruise control and Corsa buttons are also housed on the left handlebar.

The GTR has no LCD; hence riders depend on third-party apps on phones to measure speed and other metrics. Luckily, there’s plenty of space to slip in a phone holder to hold the phone as a display.

      Water Resistance

The Weped GTR has no IP rating, which means it is not water-resistant and cannot be used in wet conditions. The lack of a waterproof scooter design can be a deal-breaker for people who need to use the scooter on damp roads and during rain showers. The major contributing factor to the lack of an IP rating is the perforations in the deck that can easily leak water to the electrical components encased.

      Reliability

The GTR comes with a high-capacity battery that lasts for years without capacity loss, fire hazard or explosion. The battery lets you ride long distances with just one single charge. The scooter also rolls on 10-inch tubeless tyres with thick inner tubes to increase stability and decrease the chance of a flat tyre. Rolling over obstacles is easier due to the dual shock system.

The scooter doesn’t feature many plastic parts, hence fewer breakables. The CNC machined aluminium also retains its lustre and strength through extensive use. The speed is fast enough for the average commuter and the adventurer. The Nutt hydraulic brakes also ensure that the rider stops efficiently when needed. The high torque motor allows for decent hill climbs and can carry very heavy riders. However, the lack of a horn and proper lighting negates low-light riding, while the absence of an IP rating limits the use in wet weather.

      Warranty

The scooter comes with a 2-year warranty that covers manufacturer defects. Compared to other electric scooter brands, this is an excellent warranty period as the scooter has a good build quality, and most parts are covered.

Customer support for this scooter is very responsive, with questions usually being answered within 24 hours. There are various online tutorials on their website to help you understand how to use the scooter and fix simple problems.

      Known Issues

While the scooter is near-perfect, the Weped GTR has a few minor flaws. Here are a few provided by GTR owners:

      • Some users have complained that the scooter is a bit stiff when turning at high speed because of its built and beefy wheels.
      • The mudguards do not keep debris from reaching the rider’s feet.

      Maintenance

The GTR Electric Scooter is straightforward to maintain. Unlike other scooters, you will not have to frequently replace parts for this scooter as it comes with high-quality components.

However, you will need to do the following to keep it in pristine condition:

      • Check on the tyre pressure daily and inflate them if needed.
      • You also need to keep an eye on the brakes or brake pads because they tend to wear out faster than other parts of the scooter.
      • You should charge the battery after every ride, and you can choose to use a fast battery charger or the one that comes with the scooter.
      • Keep a dust cover on the electrical components to maintain them in good condition.
      • Periodically check on screws and nuts and tighten them if needed.
      • Keep track of mileage for your records and keep spare parts like tyres, inner tubes, brake pads etc., for future repairs.

Weped GTR: Is it worth the money and is it worth buying?

It is pretty hard to ignore the fact that this scooter costs £3975/$5,300, almost as much as some amazing motorcycle models. So, is what you’re getting from the Weped GTR worth the hefty price tag? It’s not a solid yes for us, because as we said, this is a niche scooter. It is a scooter for people that want to stand out. It is not an excellent pick for beginners, and it’s not well built for the avid explorer.

However, this scooter ticks the boxes for riders looking for a stylish, unique scooter. The scooter is also a worthy collectable. The 65mph top speed will surely come in handy for scooterists looking to race out on the freeway. It also travels long distances, making it perfect for casual exploration. The tyres and suspension make for a comfortable ride. Again, the sturdy build and premium quality components mean that this scooter can be a one-off investment for you.

So, if the highlights of this scooter call to you, then you are probably who Weped had in mind as they designed this masterpiece. If the price tag threw you off, then you can keep scouting for a scooter with near similar performance at a lesser price. But, it will probably fall way behind what Weped have done with the GTR.
