The Unagi Model One was designed for the modern urban commuter – we found it effortless to carry up and down stairs – which is what makes the Model One so attractive. Most scooters within this power rating range typically weigh 35lbs onwards – so the extra weight saved with the Model One really does make it “Ultra Portable”. To achieve this weight, Unagi has turned to Toray Carbon Fibre (of Japanese Origin) – this allows them to save weight on the main stem tube – which on most scooters adds a fair amount of weight (as the stems are usually cast/metal) and require a heavy duty clamp to deal with lateral forces imposed when riding the scooter. Unagi combine a thin, lightweight steering tube (made from Carbon Fibre) with a lightweight, smart folding/locking system that is the best we’ve seen. The Model One offers up 2 flavours in terms of power output – a 350w model and a 500w model (with peak output up to 800w). You get DUAL wheel drive – whereas MOST scooters use single drive – this gives the Model One more torque and better capabilities when it comes to hill climbing / gradients. The battery and controller are optimised to give the longest possible range. To keep the scooter light – Unagi opted for a small battery at 9.0ah – HOWEVER, the motor controllers are optimised to minimise heat generation and for better power management – squeezing up to 15.5 miles of range per charge.
Charging time is around 4-5 hours – which means for most, a last mile commute to the office isn’t fraut with worries about range for the return trip – most will make their outbound and inward journies on a single charge – but, should you need – the charger is sleek so can be carried to the office for a top up charge for longer commutes.

Whilst Unagi as a company might not have much of a range – they’ve done what other manufacturers haven’t (or at least not to the same degree) – they’ve built a scooter and worked tirelessly to refine it to the point where it offers the best all round balance between quality, cost, weight, styling power and affordability. Whilst there ARE much cheaper scooters – you won’t get the same quality as you will with the model one. On top of that Unagi now offer US customers the ability to get a scooter on subscription from just $49 a month – the cost of a few coffess a month and you can own a high end electric scooter that’s a culmination of years of R&D and built from high quality materials.
We were seriously impressed with Unagi and their customer support also – we ordered a Model One on subscription and it landed with us a few days later.
Verdict
The Unagi Model One – is, as of 2022 the best electric scooter we’ve tested as a commuter scooter. It’s ultra light weight design combined with dual drive and optimised controllers give this scooter plenty of power and range without compromising on weight.

When we saw the initial price – we were a little concerned that the pricing point for power was steep – however, when we received the Model One – the weight and build quality immediately justified the price tag. You’ve probably heard of Bird- an app-based scooter rental service that began in California and expanded to the rest of North America, the Middle East, and Europe. Bird has been at the forefront in the e-scooter revolution, renting out electric scooters at affordable prices. The company has now started selling consumer versions of its in-house e-scooters.
Bird has three e-scooter models: Birdie- designed for kids, Bird Air- a budget model, and Bird One- a hugely popular commuter electric scooter.
Bird One stands out with its precision engineering and stylish design, ideal for the modern scooter. This scooter was designed for rental use, thus featuring a rugged, tank-look build. As such, the scooter can take in a lot of abuse and wear and tear associated with endless use and wild renters.
Bird essentially integrated the leading features in top-performing electric scooters with a rugged design to produce a solid commuting scooter. Bird claims that the scooter was built in line with 31 different safety and quality certifications; hence you can rely on it to commute daily.
Despite featuring a tank-look build, the Bird One still maintains a sleek, stylish and straightforward appearance, like most modern urban e-scooters. The scooter’s base measures 109 x 46.2cm, with the stem measuring 119cm in height.
Weighing 38.6 lbs. (17.5 Kgs), the Bird One can support riders weighing up to 220 lbs. (100kg), thus compatible with a wide spectrum of riders.
The handlebars are rounded in thick rubber, enhancing ride comfort. While they are not the comfiest in the scooter world, they are pretty durable and functional. A thumb press accelerator and QR code on the right-hand grip and a bell on the left.

The Bird One is powered by a 300W brushless front hub motor, which accelerates it to a top speed of 18 mph. The acceleration is pretty smooth and climbs hills with 15% max gradeability at a maximum load of 220 lbs. The scooter is fitted with a 36V 12800 mAh battery that can power the scooter for up to 25 miles on a single charge. With the lack of a display to monitor battery levels, the Bird App warns you when you’re about to run out of battery. The battery takes up to 12 hours to charge fully. You can monitor the charging state via two LEDs (charging lights) located on the handlebar.
The Bird One is fitted with a dual braking system consisting of a regenerative front motor brake and a rear mechanical drum brake. The combination of the two brakes offers incredible stopping power, keeping riders safe even in emergencies. The two brakes are operated via a single lever, placed on the left-hand handlebar, allowing for ease in engaging the brakes. The scooter is also safe to ride at night or in low light conditions, thanks to the combination of automatic front and rear LEDs (30-40 lumens) with side reflectors for enhanced visibility.
The Bird One feels stable and comfortable on typical urban terrains in terms of ride quality. The 9-inch semi-solid tyres offer decent dampening and are large enough to go over bumps and small obstacles on the road without annoying clunks. However, the scooter lacks a suspension system which would have come in handy to enhance the overall ride. The wheels are also immune to flats, providing you with lots of conveniences when it comes to maintenance.
Being a commuter e-scooter, portability is an essential feature. The Bird One lacks a folding mechanism, perhaps to maintain its structural integrity by avoiding the shortcomings of a folding mechanism, notably stem wobble and increased wear and tear on moving parts. However, the lack of a folding mechanism doesn’t tie down the scooter regarding portability. Weighing 38.6lbs. , the scooter is relatively portable over small distances. It doesn’t fold, so fitting the Bird One inside a car or in compact spaces would be a problem. This is less of an issue if you’re considering using this scooter as a sole mode of commuting and not as a last-mile solution to commuting from the train terminus or bus park to the office and vice versa.
The Bird One integrates modern security features, notably in-built GPS technology for tracking, tamper alarm, and an immobilisation option to lock or unlock the scooter remotely. The one must be connected to the Bird App for these security features to function.

The Turboant X7 Pro offers a decent ride quality despite the lack of suspensions. The plush 10-inch pneumatic tyres, rarely seen on budget commuter scooters, do an excellent dampening job, delivering a smooth ride. Needless to say, if the scooter had suspension, the ride quality would be much better. Ride comfort is further enhanced by the ergonomic handlebars coated in rubber coupled with the spacious deck covered in grippy silicone rubber with a decent amount of ground clearance.
Safety is critical in commuter scooters, and the X7 Pro ticks the safety box too. The scooter is fitted with a triple braking system providing more than enough power to bring it to a safe and precise stop. It features a front regenerative brake, a rear disc brake and a foot brake, all of which are pretty responsive, ensuring safe stops. The X7 Pro is also secure to ride at night thanks to the powerful 3W LED headlight, reflective lights on both sides of the front and rear tyres and brake light on the rear fender to notify other road users that you’re slowing down.
In terms of portability, the X7 Pro is amazingly portable thanks to its lightweight design and easy folding mechanism. Nonetheless, the acceleration is smooth and non-jerky plus the scooter is not intimidating. To start the scooter, riders must first kick-push the scooter manually for at least 2 mph before engaging the throttle for the acceleration to pick up. The Xiaomi M365 Pro integrates three riding modes, making it flexible and versatile.
